Original C-3PO Prop from Star Wars Film Sells for Over $1 Million at Auction

A significant piece of cinematic history was sold at auction on March 25 when a functional C-3PO head prop from the 1980 film 'The Empire Strikes Back' fetched $1,058,400. The sale occurred through Propstore, an auction house specializing in entertainment memorabilia, and significantly exceeded pre-sale estimates of $350,000 to $700,000. The artifact originated from a crew member's family associated with the production. According to Brandon Alinger, Propstore's chief operating officer, items from the Star Wars franchise remain highly desirable among collectors, with this prop being a standout lot. The head was constructed by British sculptor Liz Moore over six months using fiberglass components, based on molds of actor Anthony Daniels. It features operational illuminated eyes with original 1980 wiring, internal protective shields, and a deliberately weathered gold finish. This specific prop is believed to be the sole C-3PO head from that film available to collectors. The sale reflects a broader trend of escalating values for high-quality Star Wars collectibles, as noted by Alinger, who mentioned that prices for such items often surpass other contemporary memorabilia. Recent notable sales include a Darth Vader lightsaber for $3.6 million and a Tom Jung illustration for $3.9 million. Actor Anthony Daniels, who portrayed the droid, has commented on the iconic status of these costumes, emphasizing their cultural significance beyond mere materials.
