Obata Noblin Office (ONO) has completed Two-Fold Studio, a dual-purpose garden room in Fairfax, California, that respectfully engages with the site's original 1912 residence through its wood-shingled exterior. The L-shaped footprint was specifically designed to protect mature tree root systems, creating a private courtyard backed by a weathered basalt wall. Inside, the studio is divided into two specialized zones: an artist's pottery workspace with expansive sliding glass doors and a Pilates studio behind a pivoting screen door. High clerestory windows along the rear elevation provide consistent natural light throughout both spaces. Vibrant yellow powder-coated aluminum window frames offer a bold modern contrast against the muted cedar and basalt materials. An elongated roof overhang shelters a wooden deck, creating an intermediate outdoor lounge area that extends the living footprint without increasing interior square footage. The project demonstrates how high-density residential lots can achieve psychological relief through thoughtful geometry and material integration. Technical precision is evident in the joinery where basalt meets wood, with an interior palette kept restrained to allow seasonal courtyard views to provide visual stimulus.
