Only Human Studio Designs Bangkok Residence with Abstracted Chinese Painting Influences

Only Human studio has completed H168 House, a mixed-use residential building in Bangkok, Thailand. The project draws inspiration from traditional Chinese paintings rather than literal cultural references, transforming historical spatial compositions through axis shifting and repetition. The design addresses the inhabitants' personal histories connected to China while situating the home within the modern Thai context. Key architectural elements include a reinterpreted moon gate rotated horizontally to create a circular courtyard, a bifurcated internal layout separating private family spaces from professional areas, and rhythmic brickwork patterns that reduce material usage. The building features exposed structural systems and mechanical elements as requested by the owners, celebrating raw construction aesthetics. Materials include imported dark grey brick flowing continuously from exterior to interior, concrete, and timber accents. The design incorporates a full-length skylight with arch-shaped fins that cast rhythmic shadows, creating experiential light patterns throughout the day. The project represents a contemporary approach to integrating cultural heritage in tropical urban architecture, allowing materials to age naturally while providing a serene counterpoint to Bangkok's dense urban environment.
