OMA's Mushroom Pavilion Opens at Casa Wabi in Oaxaca
OMA has completed its first built project in Mexico: the Mushroom Pavilion at Fundación Casa Wabi in Oaxaca. Designed by Shohei Shigematsu, the pavilion is an elliptical structure dedicated to mushroom cultivation, community gathering, and contemplation. Located on a 65-acre site between mountains and coast, the pavilion features three chambers for fruiting, incubation, and storage arranged around a central meeting space. Its stepped lower level serves as an amphitheater supporting handmade terracotta pots by local artisans. A central oculus brings natural light, while perimeter openings enable ventilation. The concrete envelope, stamped with burlap, will develop a patina over time from iron-rich water. The project is part of the Casa Wabi campus founded by Bosco Sodi.
