Oleksandr Dubovyk, 94, Gets First Major Retrospective in Kyiv
Ukrainian artist Oleksandr Dubovyk, who will celebrate his 95th birthday on 1 August, is the subject of his inaugural major retrospective, 'Labyrinths of Meanings,' currently on display at the Ukrainian House in Kyiv until 2 August. This exhibition, organized by the Stedley Art Foundation, began in late June at a location recently affected by a Russian attack. A non-conformist since the 1960s, Dubovyk transitioned from Realism to abstract symbolism. His 1963 piece, 'Nuclear Physicists,' embodies Expressionism. Following Ukraine's independence in 1991, his art featured on stamps, and he designed stained-glass windows for Kyiv's New Apostolic Church. During the 2022 invasion, Dubovyk stayed in Ukraine, producing around 100 pieces in his 'The Phantoms' series. His 'White Bouquet' motif serves as inspiration for the Bouquet Kyiv Stage festival, backed by Evgeni Utkin's Dom Master Klass.
