Ole Scheeren's Róng Museum to Open in Shenzhen in 2027 as Cultural Hub

German architect Ole Scheeren is designing the Róng Museum of Art, scheduled to open in 2027 within Shenzhen's Houhai Hybrid Campus. The museum represents Scheeren's latest cultural intervention in China's technology center, featuring a complex, hive-like structure intended to be permeable and engage the public. The project spans over 10,000 square meters, with approximately 4,500 square meters dedicated to core museum functions. It will focus on visual art, design, performance, moving image, digital media, and architecture from the 20th and 21st centuries. The museum is privately funded but aims for a public mission, distinct from both state institutions and typical private collections. Scheeren discussed the museum's development in an interview, noting its integration into a mixed-use campus ecosystem and its role in Shenzhen's transformation from manufacturing hub to creative center. He emphasized collaborative design processes and the building's flexible interior spaces. The museum's name, meaning 'blending' or 'convergence,' reflects its architectural and programmatic goals. Scheeren's previous projects in Asia include Beijing's CCTV headquarters (2012), Bangkok's MahaNakhon (2016), Singapore's The Interlace (2013), Beijing's Guardian Art Center (2018), and Shanghai's The Axiom (2024).
