Ohio-Class Submarine: The Ultimate Stealth Nuclear Platform

The United States Navy operates the Ohio-class submarine, renowned for being the most formidable warship ever constructed, due to its stealth and nuclear strike capabilities. Weighing 18,000 tons, these submarines are nearly imperceptible to both active and passive sonar. This is achieved through large shock absorbers that minimize reactor vibrations, a silent pump-jet propulsor, and anechoic tiles on the hull that absorb and distort sound. Fourteen of these submarines are equipped with 20 UGM-133 Trident II ballistic missiles, each armed with four nuclear warheads, capable of hitting targets up to 4,600 miles away from shallow depths. The remaining four serve as cruise missile platforms, carrying up to 154 BGM-109 Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles (TLAMs) and are set to be retired by 2028, likely replaced by Virginia-class submarines. The ballistic missile variants will continue operating until at least 2040, eventually being replaced by the quieter Columbia-class submarines.
