Office S&M Architects completes carbon-sequestering cork extension on Victorian terrace in London

Cork Loft, a vertical addition to a Victorian terrace in Walthamstow, London, has been finalized by Office S&M Architects for residents Quentin and Anaïs. This project transforms damp, neglected spaces into a striking exterior adorned with vertical cork cladding panels, selected for their regenerative properties and inviting texture. Sourced from oak bark without cutting down trees, the cork not only gives off a natural scent but also offers remarkable thermal and sound insulation. The facade features panels with varying UV protection, allowing them to age at different rates, revealing patterns reminiscent of World War II dazzle ships. Inside, vibrant yellow accents celebrate the clients' French heritage, highlighted by a sculptural staircase and pendant lights. Cinematic elements are present in features like the bedroom’s large rectangular window and the bathroom’s circular porthole, reflecting the owners' love for cinema. The lightweight cork facilitated increased volume without the need for heavy structural support, serving as skin, insulation, and aggregate. Catrina Stewart, Founding Director of Office S&M, emphasizes the project’s exploration of cork’s sustainable and economical potential, promoting a philosophy of "joyful sustainability." This vision contrasts with sterile efficiency, favoring expressive architectural techniques. The studio’s earlier projects, including Beacon House and Brockley House, showcase a continual drive to redefine urban renewal.
