Octopus Mating Arm Functions as Sensory Organ Detecting Female Hormones, Harvard Study Reveals

A study published April 2 in Science reveals that the male octopus's specialized mating arm, the hectocotylus, serves as a sensory organ capable of detecting female-produced chemicals. Researchers from Harvard University found that male California two-spot octopuses can locate mates without visual contact by "tasting" progesterone through chemosensation. Experiments showed males successfully mating through dividers in darkness and responding to progesterone-coated tubes. The hormone binds to CRT1 proteins on the hectocotylus, previously known for detecting microbes on prey. Biologist Pablo Villar noted the rarity of combining sensation and reproduction in a single organ. The discovery suggests females don't need overt mating signals, as males detect natural hormone profiles. Researchers remain uncertain whether all octopus species share this trait or its evolutionary significance.
