Octant Douro Valley Introduces Design-Focused Residential Retreats in Portugal

Octant Douro, a property in Portugal's Douro Valley, has expanded with the launch of the House Collection, comprising 20 independent residential retreats. Located in Castelo de Paiva, these accommodations are integrated into the terraced hillsides, emphasizing a connection to the landscape through design. The project, completed this year, includes 16 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom split-level residences, bringing the total number of units at the property to 79. Lisbon-based designer Cristina Jorge de Carvalho led the redesign of the hotel's public spaces and the new retreats, employing a sanctuary aesthetic that replaces conventional hospitality finishes. The design features floor-to-ceiling glass throughout, offering views of the river and vineyards, and utilizes regional materials such as local schist, corten steel, and warm wood tones to harmonize with the environment. A modern inclined elevator, or funicular, connects hilltop suites to the riverfront, addressing the site's vertical layout. Each unit provides private gardens or interior patios, with experiences like Tibetan bowl meditations and chef-led dinners available. The project incorporates natural ventilation systems to reduce air conditioning use, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship. This expansion enhances the property's offerings as a luxury retreat rooted in the Douro Valley's cultural and natural heritage.
