Obama Presidential Center Opens with 28+ Public Art Commissions

On June 19, which is also Juneteenth, the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago welcomed its first visitors. This impressive 19.3-acre site features over 28 unique pieces of art. The center highlights contemporary art as a significant form of community expression, showcasing works by artists like Mark Bradford, Jenny Holzer, and Njideka Akunyili Crosby, whose portrait of Barack and Michelle Obama, 'The Obamas: Springing Forth' (2026), was unveiled on June 14 in the lobby. The campus includes a museum, library, gardens, and sports facilities, transforming the idea of a presidential library into a blend of civic engagement and art. The opening weekend offered free events, art workshops, and community activities.
