Oakland's New Arts Chief Lyz Luke Battles for Funding and Trust
Lyz Luke became Oakland's cultural affairs manager in March 2024 after the position was eliminated and reinstated. The city's arts budget is only $300,000 in grants, compared to San Francisco's $29 million. Luke aims to raise $2 million in stopgap funding, implement a 3.5% admission tax on events with 400+ attendees, and launch an arts and wellness pilot with Kaiser Permanente and La Clinica de la Raza. She also seeks to codify cultural districts. Luke co-founded UnderCover Presents and previously led Living Jazz. Councilmember Janani Ramachandran had called the role a "figurehead."
