Nvidia to Acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 Billion

Nvidia has reached an agreement to purchase Hugging Face, a prominent platform for open-source AI models, for $12.9 billion, as reported by The Information. This transaction, which values Hugging Face at over $13 billion, is not yet complete and may still be abandoned. Established in 2016, Hugging Face serves as a favored destination for developers to share and download open-source AI models. The acquisition would enhance Nvidia's position in the open-source AI sector, potentially balancing the power of proprietary AI solutions from firms like Anthropic and OpenAI. Additionally, it would help Nvidia maintain its lead in AI chips as major labs create their own. Hugging Face’s CEO, Clem Delangue, supports Nvidia's commitment to open-source, referencing a letter from Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang and 24 other companies advocating for U.S. backing of open models. This deal would also signify Nvidia's resurgence in cloud computing, allowing the company to monetize unused cloud resources. The valuation represents a significant increase from Hugging Face's previous worth of $4.5 billion in 2023. Last year, Hugging Face declined a $500 million investment from Nvidia. The company currently earns approximately $150 million annually and is nearing profitability. The acquisition would provide Hugging Face with Nvidia's extensive resources amid intensifying competition in AI infrastructure.
