Nureyev's Romeo and Juliet Ballet Revived at Paris Opera Bastille

The Paris Opera Ballet has presented a revival of Rudolf Nureyev's 1984 production of 'Romeo and Juliet' at the Opéra Bastille. The ballet, set to Sergei Prokofiev's score, is based on William Shakespeare's play. The production originally premiered in London in 1977 before Nureyev, then director of dance at the Paris Opera, staged it in France. The current performances feature principal dancers Sae Eun Park as Juliet and Paul Marque as Romeo, supported by the Paris Opera Ballet corps. Nureyev's choreography emphasizes the story's urban violence and youthful passion, drawing comparisons to 'West Side Story' with its depiction of rival gangs in Verona. The production features elaborate sets and costumes by Ezio Frigerio, with designs incorporating gold, carmine red, and oriental-inspired details. Key supporting roles are performed by Francesco Mura as Mercutio, Jack Gasztowtt as Benvolio, and Jérémy-Loup Quer as Tybalt. The Paris Opera Orchestra is conducted by Robert Houssart. The ballet runs for approximately three hours and has been noted for its athletic choreography and dramatic intensity.
