Numero Cromatico Creates Site-Specific Installation at Elica's Fabriano Facility

The artist collective Numero Cromatico has created a new site-specific installation titled 'Essere a malapena immaginabili' (Barely Imaginable Beings) at the industrial headquarters of Elica in Fabriano, Italy. The work was commissioned by Fondazione Ermanno Casoli and Elica as part of the 'E-straordinario' training program curated by Marcello Smarrelli. The installation emerged from a workshop conducted by the artists with Elica Group employees on March 3-4, 2026, which involved drawing exercises and the speculative use of artificial intelligence to analyze symbols and generate new connections. The resulting piece is a large-scale curtain featuring hybrid creatures of various forms and colors, intended to open viewers to new conceptual associations. Numero Cromatico, founded in Rome in 2011, operates at the intersection of artistic experimentation and scientific research, with members from visual arts, neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, and design. The installation joins Elica's existing corporate collection, which includes works by Claire Fontaine, Elena Mazzi, and Fabio Barile. Curator Marcello Smarrelli described the project as creating an 'imaginary bestiary' that represents company life and allows participants to renegotiate their place in the contemporary world of work. The workshop revealed that employees found the manual, analog creation process particularly engaging, highlighting the importance of physical making in an increasingly digital environment. The project explores how AI can serve as a tool for critical thinking rather than merely a technical solution, with participants developing character prompts for imagined creatures to understand both the possibilities and limitations of AI-generated imagery.
