Nina Maria Allmoslechner's debut photobook 'When White Blankets' traces three generations of glacier change

publication · 2026-06-29

Austrian photographer Nina Maria Allmoslechner has released her first photobook, 'When White Blankets', a collaboration with her father and grandfather that documents glacier retreat in the Austrian Alps over three generations. The project began in 2024 when her grandfather unearthed a box of Super 8 reels from the 1970s, showing footage of their glacier expeditions. Allmoslechner combined her father's writing, stills from her grandfather's footage, and her own analogue photography of the same locations today. The bilingual (German and English) publication was printed by KOPA, a Lithuanian printing house that operates entirely on solar energy. The book launched at The Photographers Gallery in London on International Day of Glaciers earlier this year, accompanied by a short film. A full-length film, co-produced with filmmaker Lily Tiger, is set to debut at film festivals later this year. Allmoslechner, who studied Photojournalism and Documentary Photography in London, now lives in London but remains deeply connected to her Alpine roots.
