Nigeria's Strategic Return to Venice Biennale in 2028 Emphasizes Cultural Sovereignty

Nigeria is preparing for its participation in the 2028 Venice Biennale with a deliberate shift in approach, moving from seeking inclusion to asserting cultural ownership. Curator Richard Vedelago, founder of Windsor Gallery and Nahous, outlines a curatorial strategy focused on establishing long-term infrastructure and artist-led inquiry rather than temporary exhibition events. The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, under Minister Hannatu Musa Musawa, is supporting this initiative as part of broader cultural policy. Vedelago emphasizes that Nigeria's presence at Venice should not be about validation from global art circuits but about defining its own narrative and value systems. The decision to pause participation between 2024 and 2028 allows for deeper research and relationship-building, moving away from what Vedelago describes as the limitations of immediacy in previous biennial models.
