Nicole Tung's Carmignac Award Exhibition Documents Overfishing Crisis Across Southeast Asia

Nicole Tung's exhibition, 'Overfishing in Southeast Asia,' is on display at the Bronx Documentary Center until April 26, 2026. Funded by the Fondation Carmignac as part of the 15th Carmignac Photojournalism Award, this project is the result of nine months of investigative work in Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Tung's photography reveals the decline of marine ecosystems, the loss of biodiversity, and the exploitation of migrant workers. Small-scale fishermen face challenges from industrial fleets that are exhausting coastal fish populations. While Thailand has made some progress since 2015, there are ongoing threats to its regulations. Indonesia experiences abuses from vessels registered in China, Korea, and Taiwan, compounded by ineffective treaty enforcement, while the Philippines contends with intimidation from Chinese militias. Tung has captured images from locations such as General Santos, Ranong, Tegal, and Tanjung Luar, urging consumers to advocate for sustainable fishing practices.
