Nick Mason's McLaren F1 GTR Expected to Fetch Over $35 Million at Auction

A one-of-a-kind 1996 McLaren F1 GTR, owned by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason for nearly three decades, will be auctioned by RM Sotheby's in Monterey from August 12 to 15. Chassis no. 10R is the first of nine 1996 examples and one of only two with a short-tail body. It is the sole F1 GTR with a factory livery—a scarlet and yellow design inspired by 1990s pop art. Mason acquired the car directly from McLaren in 1999. The track-only variant was converted for road use by McLaren, including removal of air restrictors, suspension adjustments, and installation of mufflers and passenger seats. Its BMW-sourced 6.0-liter V-12 produces 591 hp. RM Sotheby's estimates the sale price will exceed $35 million, which would make it the most expensive McLaren ever, surpassing a 1994 F1 that sold for $25.3 million in 2020. The car is Le Mans-ready and one of 28 F1 GTRs built between 1995 and 1997.
