Ney & Partners Completes Cantilevered Steel Footbridge from Historic Albi Viaduct in France

Ney & Partners has finished constructing a pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Albi, France, which extends from a 19th-century railway viaduct. This new structure links the UNESCO-listed city center with the Pratgraussals district. The original viaduct, dating to approximately 1865, features seven masonry arches rising 30 meters above the Tarn River. The design approach emphasizes deference to the historic viaduct, using a cantilevered steel system that avoids altering the existing arches. The bridge deck incorporates a sinusoidal, undulating form that mirrors the rhythm of the viaduct's arches. Spanning 180 meters, the path varies in width, expanding to 7.5-meter balconies at the center of each arch, which include seating areas. These balconies offer views of landmarks like the Palais de la Berbie and Sainte-Cécile Cathedral. Structurally, the bridge employs a continuous steel beam with double supports at piers to minimize profile thickness, utilizing a closed box girder for stiffness. The project, developed with urban planners MS-A, also aims to reconnect urban spaces separated by the original viaduct, such as Castle Square and Calvary Square, promoting sustainable mobility. It enhances the area by transforming underused land into public entry points.
