New York Museums Embrace Restaurant Boom as Third Spaces

other · 2026-06-11

New York City is seeing a rise in fancy restaurants opening in museums and cultural spots, with several set to open by mid-2026. Recently, Amant in Bushwick introduced Zoli, a seafood restaurant by chef Ned Baldwin, featuring an aquarium-themed artwork by Pierre Huyghe. Meanwhile, the Breuer Building, now occupied by Sotheby’s, has Marcel, created by Roman and Williams, where chef Marie Aude-Rose whips up chicken paprikash. This month, Oberon is launching at the New Museum, led by co-executive chefs Julia Sherman and Ali Ghriskey, with designs by OMA. In 2027, Via Carota's Rita Sodi and Jody Williams will open at The Met. Henry Rich called these spots 'third spaces' for community.
