New York City Government Reinstates TikTok Access After Security Review

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has reversed a ban on TikTok for city government agencies, allowing them to resume posting on the platform with specific security measures in place. The decision was announced on Tuesday through the mayor's office, which cited a memo from NYC Cyber Command outlining the policy change. The original prohibition was implemented in 2023 under former Mayor Eric Adams, aligning with federal and state actions that restricted the app from government devices due to concerns about data sharing with the Chinese government through its parent company ByteDance. Mayor Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist and known social media figure, emphasized the move as a way to expand the city's communication reach. TikTok has previously dismissed security worries as baseless and has taken steps to separate its U.S. operations to address regulatory concerns and prevent a broader national ban. The reinstatement follows nearly three years of the app being blocked from official city phones.
