New UN Special Rapporteur on Right to Food Criticizes German Government

Sofía Monsalve Suárez, a Colombian civil society activist, has been appointed as the new UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, effective May 1. She is the first to hold the position without an academic career background. Her primary goal is to improve states' compliance with human rights obligations. In an interview with der Freitag, she criticizes the German government's approach to hunger, noting that despite conceptual advances in the right to food, approximately 700 million people suffer from acute hunger and 2.3 billion lack secure access to food. She highlights that countries like Brazil are doing better in addressing hunger. The interview also touches on the weaponization of hunger in conflicts in Gaza, Cuba, and Sudan.
