New Retirement Home in Nový Bydžov Designed by Architektura for 2025 Completion

architecture-design · 2026-04-04

Architecture firm Architektura has designed a new senior living facility in Nový Bydžov, Czechia, scheduled for completion in 2025. The project, commissioned by the Town of Nový Bydžov, will occupy a 46,000 square meter site that was previously an orchard near a hospital. The building will consist of four separate households capable of accommodating around 60 residents, all designed to be fully accessible. The design incorporates a symmetrical, chateau-like layout with atriums, gardens, and ample natural light. Materials include brick, chosen for its association with domesticity and permanence. The location adjacent to both medical facilities and a cemetery with a church is intended to foster an atmosphere of tranquility and reflection rather than negative connotations. Photographer Filip Šlapal documented the project, which was curated by Hadir Al Koshta. The architects describe the scheme as addressing broader European questions about aging populations, quality of life for older adults, and societal attitudes toward the elderly in contemporary Czech society.
