New Book Celebrates Neil Kirk's Fashion Photography for Vogue During the Supermodel Era

A new publication titled 'Neil Kirk in Vogue, The Supermodel Years' honors the work of British fashion photographer Neil Kirk, focusing on his contributions to various Vogue editions primarily during the 1980s and 1990s. The book was co-authored by Kirk's wife, stylist Vivienne Kirk, along with writer and curator Iain R. Webb, with art direction by Rita Sowins. Former publishing executive Liz Rees-Jones played a crucial role in assembling the extensive collection of images. Kirk, who passed away in 2022, was known for his dynamic, movement-focused photography that broke from traditional posed fashion imagery. His career began in the late 1970s after studying medicine and film history, and he worked as an art director at Saatchi and Saatchi before becoming a photographer. Kirk collaborated with numerous notable figures including Grace Coddington, Jerry Hall, Anna Wintour, Bryan Ferry, Cindy Crawford, and Claudia Schiffer. His images often featured models in motion, capturing them in real-life urban settings like London's Holborn Viaduct, Manhattan streets, and Paris's Place des Victoires. The book highlights how Kirk's work reflected feminist ideals of agency and possibility, moving away from decorative passivity. According to Webb, British Vogue's art director Robin Derrick noted that Kirk's photographs were particularly popular with readers. The publication includes previously unseen materials discovered in Kirk's garage near London, such as a portrait of Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren for Vogue Italia. Vivienne Kirk describes the project as a way to recognize her husband as an unsung hero of fashion photography.
