Netflix's 'The Polygamist' Sparks Global Debate on Polygamy and Infidelity

Netflix's Zulu-language series 'The Polygamist' has ignited international conversations about polygamy, betrayal, and family dynamics since its release on June 12. The 22-episode drama, based on Sue Nyathi's 2012 novel, follows wealthy Johannesburg businessman Jonasi Gomora, whose funeral reveals he had three wives and a mistress. Produced by Stained Glass TV in collaboration with Netflix, the show is executive produced by Gugu Zuma-Ncube and Thuli Zuma, daughters of former South African President Jacob Zuma, a polygamist. Within its first week, it became the most-watched show on Netflix in South Africa and Kenya, reached top 10 in Nigeria and Mauritius, attracted two million views, and ranked fourth globally for non-English series. It also trended in Trinidad and Tobago, Romania, and the Dominican Republic. The series addresses issues like sexually transmitted diseases, gender-based violence, and HIV, with 13% of South Africa's population living with the virus. Kenyan civil servant Geoffrey Mosiria has called for a ban, arguing it gives polygamy a bad name, while critic Phil Mphela calls it a pivotal moment for South African TV. Viewers are already demanding a second season.
