Neeltje de Vries: Grace and Freedom in Black-and-White Female Body Photography
Amsterdam-based Dutch photographer Neeltje de Vries has developed a highly personal photographic practice centered on the female body, following a background in graphic design and studies at the Fotoacademie. Her images, almost always in black and white, treat the female form primarily as a question of shapes, lines and movement, composed through essential arrangements in which every element appears deliberately placed. Natural light, which she frequently employs, keeps the pictures simple and direct, allowing bodies and their forms to carry the meaning. The work pursues a delicate, direct beauty in which poses, light and few elements meet with simplicity, producing a natural balance and a subtle grace while the body becomes an expression of freedom and authenticity beyond pure aesthetics. De Vries has stated that a woman's body is beautiful, but that showing only aesthetics quickly becomes boring and does not interest her. She wants to provoke curiosity and reflection, so that viewers keep wondering who the woman in the photograph is and what her story might be, with each image potentially a frame from a film. The photographer lives and works in Amsterdam. Her work was encountered years ago during an ImageNation Paris exhibition in Milan, and has been followed with growing interest since.
