Nearly half of Gen Z and millennial women consider leaving the arts

A recent study by Artnet and the Association of Women in the Arts (AWITA) indicates that almost 50% of women from Gen Z and millennials are contemplating exiting the arts within the next five years. Titled "Hardwiring Change: Buying Back Time," the report reveals that 76% of women aged 35–54 encounter systemic obstacles tied to gender, race, or class. Key factors include insufficient salaries, unclear promotion criteria, and excessive administrative duties. With women making up nearly 80% of arts professionals, this potential loss of talent is alarming. The report was presented at Deutsche Bank’s London office on June 8, 2026, featuring a panel led by Margaret Carrigan, which included notable figures such as Ese Jade Onojeuro and Elaine Bledell, the first female CEO in Southbank Centre's 75-year history. The findings also show that only four chairs and five leaders among 15 UK national museums are women, with all but one being white. Additionally, 48% of full-time employees dedicate at least half their time to administrative work, and nearly two-thirds utilize AI tools, which may jeopardize more women's jobs. The discussion emphasized that DEI initiatives often add pressure to those they intend to support, and that retaining talent necessitates equitable pay and opportunities for advancement.
