National Lottery Heritage Fund Increases UK Heritage Investment to £1.46 Billion for 2026-2029

The National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) has announced a £1.46 billion investment plan for 2026-2029, representing a 17% increase from the £1.245 billion allocated in the 2023-2026 cycle. This funding boost is driven by projected lottery receipts rising from £1.089 billion to £1.423 billion, a 31% increase, based on forecasts from Allwyn, the National Lottery operator since 2024. In the UK, the lottery system distributes approximately 23% of its revenue to good causes, with the NLHF receiving 20% of that share, making it the primary heritage funder. Annual allocations are around £380 million (€444 million). The majority of funds are distributed through National Lottery Heritage Grants, supporting projects from £10,000 to £10 million, amounting to £359-386 million annually. In 2024-2025, £157 million went to buildings and monuments, £90 million to museums, libraries, and archives, £68 million to landscapes, and £30 million to cultures and memories. Beyond responsive grants, the NLHF has allocated £134 million for strategic initiatives. The 2026-2029 plan prioritizes heritage at risk and climate adaptation, and aims to increase youth involvement in heritage projects, careers, and co-designed initiatives. A flexible reserve of £233 million (16% of the total) is included to address emerging needs or priorities during the period. This contrasts with France's Loto du patrimoine, which raises €25-30 million annually for the Mission Stéphane Bern.
