National Label's Impact on French Contemporary Art Centers

The 'Centre d'art contemporain d'intérêt national' (Cacin) label, established by France's 2016 Creation and Heritage Law, has been awarded to 50 contemporary art institutions as of April 2026. This designation enhances national visibility and legitimizes their missions. While many French organizations identify as contemporary art centers, the label requires meeting specific criteria set in 2017, including having an artistic program, administrative autonomy, and establishing multi-year agreements with public partners within six months. Among 58 members of the DCA network founded in 1992, 15 lack the Cacin label, and among the 50 labeled centers, eight are not DCA members. According to Patrice Goasduff, co-director of 40mcube (labeled since 2019), the label elevates institutions to nationally recognized status. Alice Motard, director of Strasbourg's CEAAC (labeled in 2024), notes it provides national recognition beyond local reputation. The label also offers protection against budget cuts, as highlighted by Anne Langlois of 40mcube and former Annemasse mayor Christian Dupessey, who observed that labeling Villa du Parc in 2020 improved municipal support and reduced political opposition to funding.
