National Gallery of Art Expands Collection with Civil War Photography and Modern Works

The National Gallery of Art has significantly enhanced its holdings through a major acquisition of photographic works. Approximately 35 images from the 19th century documenting the American Civil War form a core part of this addition. Notable photographers represented in this group include George N. Barnard, Alexander Gardner, Matthew Brady, and Andrew Joseph Russell. A particularly significant piece is Gardner's image of Abraham Lincoln's second inauguration on March 4, 1865, taken at the U.S. Capitol under rainy conditions shortly before the war's conclusion and Lincoln's death. Historical accounts note that sunlight broke through the clouds during Lincoln's speech. Gardner, who emigrated from Scotland and managed Brady's Washington gallery, later photographed the Lincoln assassination conspirators. The acquisition also encompasses over 140 photographs from the 20th and 21st centuries by artists from numerous countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, Mexico, and several European nations. Highlights include works by Ilse Bing, Florence Henri, Albert Renger-Patzsch, and Josef Sudek. Additionally, the museum acquired Sebastião Salgado's 'Genesis' portfolio, a series of 50 platinum prints created between 2004 and 2011 focusing on labor, conflict, and nature. E. Carmen Ramos, the chief curatorial and conservation officer, stated that these acquisitions allow the institution to expand its collection with historically relevant works and contemporary pieces, strengthening areas like photography and sculpture. The artworks were funded by various donors, including Diana and Mallory Walker, Ronald M. Costell, M.D., the Estate of Marsha E. Swiss, and W. Bruce and Delaney H. Lundberg.
