National Film and Sound Archive Preserves and Loans 35mm Prints for Tom Cruise Festival

The National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) holds a vast collection of film reels, including 16mm and 35mm prints, selected for their cultural, historical, and cinematic significance. Recently, the NFSA supported a Tom Cruise-themed festival at Ritz Cinemas in Sydney, providing 35mm prints of Eyes Wide Shut (1999) and Minority Report (2002). These films were preserved due to their influence on cinema, technical innovation, and involvement of Australian talent such as Nicole Kidman. The NFSA stores its collection in a temperature-controlled environment at 16C and 35% relative humidity, using compactus units and barcode tracking. Loan requests require up to eight weeks' notice and rights holder permission. The NFSA Restores program creates high-resolution digital cinema packages to ensure indefinite screening. The loan process involves condition reporting, repairs, and adherence to a Theatrical Screening Loan Agreement. The NFSA emphasizes that sharing original prints sustains specialized skills and reinforces film as intangible cultural heritage.
