Nathan Fielder's Secret Elizabeth Holmes Film Premieres at Telluride, WIRED Cover Reveals Prison Call
Nathan Fielder's top-secret project, You Can See Everything, debuted in early September as an unannounced addition to the Telluride Film Festival, and WIRED, which put Fielder on its fall cover, published an extensive interview with him. Codirected by Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, the film documents a 34-day period with Elizabeth Holmes and her partner Billy Evans at a beach house before Holmes' incarceration. The production began after Holmes and Evans approached A24 about having their life documented; negotiations initially collapsed, and Fielder later called A24 asking to meet her. Fielder said the project was kept secret for three years, with only a few dozen people aware, partly at the subjects' request and partly to protect the filmmaking process. A24, which did not initially know the film was being made, chose a simultaneous Telluride rollout roughly five weeks before national release. Fielder said he was permitted to deliver nothing if the footage failed, a condition he described as freeing. Holmes, convicted of defrauding investors, reportedly will move to a halfway house next year. Fielder said communication with Billy Evans was cut off in the final weeks over what the filmmakers felt was an effort to control the project, and Evans had not seen the film. Days before the national release, Fielder received three missed calls from a prison number; on the third he answered and spoke with Holmes, who told him twice, 'I trust you.'
