Nao Tamura Designs Sculptural Bookcase for Porro Furniture Brand

New York designer Nao Tamura has created a new bookcase called 'Ryo' for the Italian furniture company Porro. The piece draws inspiration from Japanese culture, with its name meaning 'edge' or 'ridge' in Japanese. Constructed from folded aluminum sheets, the system features horizontal shelves supported by adjustable triangular components. More than just storage furniture, the design employs a deconstructivist aesthetic that gives it sculptural qualities. The angled surfaces interact with light to produce distinctive shadow patterns, while a subtle protective coating maintains the material's industrial appearance. This collaboration continues Tamura's relationship with Porro, following her previous 'Origata' bench and console that referenced traditional kimono craftsmanship. The century-old brand, based in Brianza, Italy, maintains its contemporary relevance through partnerships with designers like Tamura, Piero Lissoni, Dordoni Studio, and Yabu Pushelberg. Porro's recent direction explores the intersection of functional objects and artistic sculpture, while expanding into commercial contract work through customized manufacturing capabilities.
