Nan Goldin Retrospective at Grand Palais and Caravage Ballet Performance in Mulhouse

The Grand Palais is hosting a major retrospective exhibition titled 'This Will Not End Well' featuring Nan Goldin's work. The display spans two locations: the Grand Palais itself, where films are shown in immersive settings, and the Chapelle Saint-Louis de la Salpêtrière, which houses a more intimate installation. A key piece included is 'The Ballad of Sexual Dependency,' a significant work comprising over 700 photographs. Goldin's art is deeply connected to her personal experiences, transforming private moments into a form of political expression through candid snapshots of bodies, faces, intimate scenes, couples, solitude, and nightlife. Her approach brings viewers close to subjects without staging or detachment, valuing unknown individuals as much as famous ones, and blending beauty with pain in single images to convey fragility, excess, and vibrant life. The exhibition is described as a moving and impactful experience. Meanwhile, the Ballet du Rhin in Mulhouse is presenting 'Caravage,' a new production by choreographer Bruno Bouché. Inspired by the painter Caravaggio, known for his use of chiaroscuro and dramatic, theatrical compositions, the performance features 20 dancers who move through highly sculpted, contrasting living tableaux. The piece captures the constant tension between sensuality, violence, tenderness, and the sacred versus the carnal, with precise gestures that evoke paintings in motion—trembling, breathing, and falling. Bouché, a former dancer at the Paris Opera who now leads the Ballet du Rhin, focuses on embodying the painter's contrasting forces of darkness and light rather than narrating his life, and his productions have achieved considerable success.
