Museums Emerge as Mental Health Partners Through Social Prescribing and Dementia Programs
Globally, museums are joining forces with the healthcare sector to tackle issues related to mental health, loneliness, and dementia. The Vancouver Art Gallery's Art of Wellbeing Lab has teamed up with PaRx, enabling physicians to prescribe visits to the Emily Carr exhibition, which includes a companion and a guide for slow observation. In the UK, non-medical concerns account for one in five GP visits, prompting social prescribing to link patients with community activities. York’s Archaeology on Prescription invites individuals referred by the NHS to participate in excavations. Switzerland’s Stapferhaus conducts a group therapy initiative called From Me to We. National Museums Liverpool offers the Memory Suitcase Loan Service through House of Memories. The V&A has integrated Cognitive Stimulation Therapy into a museum setting. Frederiksberg Museums and Roskilde University facilitate See Listen Talk for psychiatric patients.
