Museum of Life and Science Marks Latine and Hispanic Heritage Month with Archaeology, Linguistics and Biotech Programs

cultural-heritage · 2026-10-01

The Museum of Life and Science hosts Latine and Hispanic Heritage Month programming in The Lab, open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 am to 12 pm and 1 to 3 pm, with activities designed for all ages. Between September 30 and October 3, visitors investigate the chemical reactions behind the Nazca lines and produce their own iron oxide artwork in a session titled "Rust or Bust." On October 3 from 1 pm to 3 pm, archaeologist and epigrapher Dr. Gabrielle Vail joins Morehead Planetarium's Dr. Amy Sayle to present Incan and Peruvian star stories and record-keeping. From October 7 to 9, participants create a Maya calendar round and mark their birthdays with glyph stamps in a program called "Keeping Time." On October 10, Dr. Jessica Vélez Avilés of the UNCCH Department of Linguistics explains how she and her students use eye-tracking technology to study language and the brain, discusses bilingualism's importance in communities, and quizzes attendees on English and Spanish dialects. On October 11 from 10 am to 12 pm, Solvias Senior Virology Analyst Liz Albertorio Sáez leads a biotech tools session featuring "pipette target-practice." The museum frames the series as a continuing celebration of Spanish language, science and culture with scientists and experts throughout the month.
