Museu Vassouras Launches with Community-Focused Contemporary Art Program

The Museu Vassouras, Brazil's newest art institution, opened in December in the city of Vassouras with a mission centered on dialogue with its local territory. Founded by collector and businessman Ronaldo Cezar Coelho, the museum occupies a historic building that originally served as the city's first hospital in 1848, later functioning as an asylum before being designated a protected heritage site in 1986. After being closed in 2007, the structure was acquired and renovated by Coelho, with architect Maurício Prochnik overseeing its adaptation into a contemporary public museum spanning 3,300 square meters, primarily dedicated to exhibition spaces on the ground floor. Despite Coelho's extensive collection that includes colonial-era works, the museum currently operates without a permanent collection, focusing instead on a two-year implementation plan that prioritizes community engagement over building a technical reserve. Artistic director Catarina Duncan, who began developing the museum project in 2020 through approximately 50 regional interviews, noted that local residents initially expected a memorial to coffee barons, reflecting Vassouras' historical significance in Brazil's imperial coffee cycle, where approximately 20,000 enslaved people worked on plantations in 1850. The museum's programming emphasizes two approaches: locally produced exhibitions that engage with the region and circulating significant exhibitions from elsewhere. The inaugural exhibition 'Chegança,' curated by Marcelo Campos, features 63 artists and is organized into three thematic sections: 'Folias,' exploring popular festivals; 'Vapor,' referencing trains and collective spaces; and 'Milagres,' examining spirituality and territory. Notable works include Tarsila do Amaral's painting 'Figura Só' (1930) from Coelho's collection, Nádia Taquary's installation 'Puxada de rede,' and pieces by artists such as Walter Firmo, André Vargas, and Denilson Baniwa. The museum's team includes Rosa Melo as executive coordinator, along with Samantha Moreira and Francisca Caporali handling pedagogical implementation.
