Museo delle Terme di Traiano Opens in Rome with Largest Surviving Roman Wall Mosaic
The Museo delle Terme di Traiano has officially launched in Rome, situated in a 230-foot subterranean space on Oppian Hill, facing the iconic Colosseum. This underground gallery was uncovered between 1997 and 1999 and lies beneath the ancient Baths of Trajan, originating from 109 CE. Among its notable exhibits is the largest existing Roman mosaic wall, measuring approximately 10 by 15 meters and standing 12 meters tall, with 20% of it preserved and located nine meters underground. A remarkable fresco depicting a view of Londinium also enhances the collection. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri emphasized the historical significance of this restoration project.
