Museo del Prado presents 'El universo del artista ante la cámara' exhibition of 19th-20th century photographic portraits
From April 13 to July 5, 2026, the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid will host 'El universo del artista ante la cámara,' an exhibition curated by Beatriz Sánchez Torija in Room 60. This showcase includes approximately thirty photographs taken between 1850 and 1940, depicting artists at work in their studios. Among the highlighted pieces are a group portrait by Ángel Alonso Martínez from 1857-1858 and a work from 1861 by Altobelli and Molins. The exhibition features various formats, including carte de visite and tarjeta de París, showcasing artists like María Luisa de la Riva and Cecilio Pla. The collection, which has grown mainly through donations, now comprises nearly 10,000 images, illustrating the connection between artists and photography during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
