Muhka to become network museum with collection as foundation

The Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (Muhka) has announced its intention to evolve into a network museum focused on artistic ambition, centering on its international collection and driven by collaboration. This resolution was reached during a Governing Body meeting held on 15 July 2026. A new artistic director will be appointed as part of this initiative. The museum's strategy is informed by three research tracks from spring 2026: an internal review, consultations with the external ecosystem, and thematic labs, all validated by an international expert panel in partnership with MINO Agency. With over 8,000 artworks and archives, Muhka plans to make its collection accessible to artists, researchers, and the public while fostering structural collaborations with other institutions in Antwerp, Flemish museums, and the L'Internationale confederation, which it co-founded. A transition plan is set to be presented to the Flemish Government on 1 October 2026, along with discussions regarding long-term accommodations. Chair Yolande Avontroodt emphasized that the museum will enhance its strength by becoming more open and sharing resources, while maintaining its autonomy.
