Mort O'Sullivan's 'The Weight of Light' Exhibition at Cassilhaus Explores 15 Photographic Processes

At Cassilhaus in North Carolina, Mort O'Sullivan showcases his MFA thesis exhibition titled 'The Weight of Light: Printmaking as Documentary Act.' The exhibition highlights a single image produced using 15 unique photographic methods, such as albumen, platinum-palladium, silver gelatin, inkjet, and risograph, all stemming from the same digital file but differing in materiality, with glass vials containing necessary chemicals on display. O'Sullivan will host an artist talk on April 12 at 3:30 PM. His exploration focuses on how the meaning of photography changes with each process, viewing printing as a form of translation. After a 25-year career in technology, he pursued an MFA at Duke University to teach at the collegiate level. His project was inspired by critiques suggesting multiple print methods for one image. Cassilhaus, established by Frank Konhaus and Ellen Cassilly, functions as both a gallery and artist residency between Durham and Chapel Hill. O'Sullivan is also the founder of Mere Editions, a fine art print studio in Chapel Hill.
