Morris & Lydia Gelb House by A. Quincy Jones and Whitney R. Smith listed for $2.7 million in Brentwood

The Morris & Lydia Gelb House, a mid-century modern residence designed by architects A. Quincy Jones and Whitney R. Smith in 1950, has been listed for sale at $2.7 million. Located in the Crestwood Hills community of Brentwood, Los Angeles, this property represents one of only 33 remaining examples from the original 160-house development by Jones and Smith. The house features a post-and-beam structure with Douglas fir components, concrete block partitions, redwood panels, and poured concrete floors across its 1,200 square feet. Originally built for Morris and Lydia Gelb, who operated a Hollywood grocery business, the three-bedroom home was sold in 2010 after their deaths. Current owners architect Bruce Norelius and his partner have completed a restoration that preserved the original design while converting a guest bedroom into a study and adding a Jack-and-Jill bathroom. The Crestwood Hills development was a collaboration between Jones and pioneering developer Joseph Eichler, aimed at providing affordable modern housing. Many of the original houses were destroyed over time, including nearly 50 in the November 1961 Bel Air Fire. The listing is handled by Brian Linder, AIA of The Value of Architecture at Compass.
