Monet's Vétheuil, effet du matin sells for €10.2 million, setting Paris auction record

On April 16, 2026, Sotheby's evening auction in Paris for Modern and Contemporary Art achieved a remarkable total of €35 million, surpassing initial projections. The standout piece was Claude Monet's Vétheuil, effet du matin (1901), which commanded €10.2 million, marking a record for the artist in the city. Another Monet, Les Îles de Port-Villez (1883), sold for €6.5 million. Both artworks were rediscovered after nearly a century. Additional significant sales included Marc Chagall's gouaches at €5 million, Lucio Fontana's Concetto Spaziale, Attese at €2 million, and Pierre Soulages' painting from 2007 at €1.1 million. The auction took place at 83, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, 75008 Paris, showcasing a strong global interest in Impressionist art.
