Monet's 1907 Nymphéas Heads to Auction with $40M+ Estimate

On June 24, Sotheby's in London will auction off Claude Monet's 1907 painting Nymphéas, which is estimated to sell for over $40 million. This estimate is the highest ever for a Monet piece in Europe. The painting is part of Monet's famous square-format water lilies series, created between 1904 and 1909, inspired by a pond he established in Giverny in 1893, where he cultivated water lilies for nearly 30 years, resulting in around 300 Nymphéas works. Helena Newman, Sotheby’s Europe chairman, calls it almost pure abstraction with breathtaking colors. Another Monet piece, Camille assise sur la plage à Trouville from 1870, is expected to reach over $9 million. The 1907 Nymphéas has only been publicly displayed twice before.
