A modernist residence in Los Altos Hills, California, originally constructed in 1959, has undergone a comprehensive renovation by Michael Hennessey Architecture. The project, known as Hilltop Residence, involved updating the single-level home to suit the contemporary lifestyle of a family of four while preserving its midcentury character. Key architectural interventions included reconfiguring the interior layout to create more open, flowing spaces, such as merging the kitchen, dining, and living areas into a continuous sequence. The design emphasizes clarity, proportion, and connection to the landscape, with carefully placed windows framing distant views and new decks extending the home's footprint. Sustainable upgrades, including photovoltaic panels, high-performance glazing, and permeable paving, were integrated to enhance performance.
