Modernist Cutlery Exhibition at Denver Art Museum Showcases Collector's 10,000-Piece Trove
Opening on 17 May at the Denver Art Museum, the exhibition 'Knife Fork Spoon: Everyday Tools, Extraordinary Design' features 150 sets of flatware spanning from 1900 to the present, sourced from Dung Ngo's extensive collection of over 10,000 items. Curator Darrin Alfred emphasizes how industrialization has influenced cutlery design. Among the showcased designers are Josef Hoffmann, Isamu Noguchi, and David Mellor. A Tapio Wirkkala set has recently gained value, now priced at $5,800. Notable items include Mellor's 'Chinese' design and the 1963 'Embassy' set. Ngo points out the growing accessibility for young collectors, and a companion book is set for release in late 2026. Corin Mellor notes a resurgence of interest in modernist cutlery.
