MoAD's 'Unbound' Exhibition Explores Blackness Through Cosmology and Diasporic Art

From October 1, 2025, to August 16, 2026, the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco will host 'Unbound: Art, Blackness, and the Universe' in celebration of its 20th anniversary. This exhibition showcases a variety of African diasporic artists who delve into themes of spirituality, mythology, and the essence of Black life, divided into three sections: 'Geo-Cartographic,' 'Religio-Mythic,' and 'Techno-Cyborgian.' Notable pieces include Mikael Owunna's 'Infinite Essence,' Harmonia Rosales' 'Creation Story,' and David Alabo's virtual reality works. Featured artists also comprise Didier William, Gustavo Nazareno, Rodney Ewing, Oasa DuVerney, Barkley L. Hendricks, and Allison Janae Hamilton. According to MoAD's Key Jo Lee, the exhibition emphasizes that Blackness is vital for comprehending existence, time, and the universe.
