Milwaukee Art Museum Showcases Dutch Theater Paintings from Alfred Bader Collection

exhibition · 2026-03-23

The Milwaukee Art Museum is presenting an exhibition titled 'Art, Life, Legacy: Northern European Paintings in the Collection of Isabel and Alfred Bader,' opening on September 29, 2023. The show features 75 works assembled by the Baders, longtime museum supporters who significantly influenced the institution's European art program. Two paintings in the exhibition and collection depict scenes from the 17th-century Dutch play 'Granida' by Pieter Cornelisz. Hooft. Abraham Hondius's 'Daifilo the Shepherd with Dog' (1669) entered the museum's holdings in 1972 through Alfred Bader's gallery and a donation from Robert V. Krikorian. Jacob Adriaensz. Backer's 'Granida and Daifilo' (c. 1640) was gifted by the Baders to Queen's University's Agnes Etherington Art Centre in 1992. The exhibition runs through January 28, 2024.
