institutional · 2026-03-20

Chillida Leku, the museum and sculpture park in Hernani dedicated to artist Eduardo Chillida, has announced that Mikel Chillida will become its director starting April 1. The grandson of the sculptor, Mikel Chillida has served as Development Director since 2019, a role in which he is credited with advancing the institution's growth, strategic partnerships, and international profile. He succeeds Mireia Massagué, who led the museum for seven years and will continue in an advisory capacity. The Chillida family expressed confidence that his deep understanding of Eduardo Chillida's artistic legacy and commitment to the museum's mission position him well to lead Chillida Leku into its next phase. Since reopening in 2019 after a closure period, the museum has focused on strengthening its international presence, launching exhibition programs, and developing educational and inclusion initiatives, earning recognition including a 2024 Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts from Spain's Ministry of Culture. Mikel Chillida stated he assumes the directorship with a commitment to preserve, research, and share Eduardo Chillida's work with broader audiences.
